The Monte Christo
This is the project that started it all. From empty to full, the transformation of this shipping container into a fully functioning Tiny House was both fulfilling and challenging. The design hurdles involved in Shipping Container build outs are many, and not for the faint of heart. Yet in the end, the juice is worth the squeeze.
The main challenge is that at 40' long and 8' wide, it is difficult to lay out a floor plan that is navigable and also comfortable. The best way to deal with these was to add a large door in the center of the length of the container, to break up the "hallway" feel that comes with being in a long, narrow rectangle.
The bathroom is in an outbuilding attached to the main building by a dogtrot covered in a pergola around which wisteria curls and flowers. This is covered more in depth in my Outdoor Showers section. Additionally, there is a rooftop deck accessed by spiral staircase on one end.
This house was build entirely modular, meaning that all pieces, including the bathroom, can be put on a truck and carried away if necessary. If you've got a project with MORE design considerations than this, I would love to hear about it.
